2017 Season Preview

The QCRG season holds some surprises and some traditions when it kicks off on Saturday, January 7th at Buffalo Riverworks. There will be fewer games between home teams than last season, only one Expo game, and a couple of new rules (see upcoming article on some rules changes). The Lake Effect Furies will have four games, the Subzero Sirens will have seven games and the Queen City Juniors will have two. There will be no Wednesday night games. We’ll be playing on Friday and Saturday nights, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The annual We All Brawl Expo game will start things off with the Villains taking on the Heros. Furies will skate with rookies, and home team foes will work together. The first whistle blows just after 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 7.

On Friday, January 20 at 7 p.m. the official season opener will repeat the 2016 Championship game and will see the Alley Kats and Devil Dollies line up against each other. This season, the Dollies have seen the bigger turnover, but you never know what those Dollies have planned. They sure surprised the Alley Kats last season.

On Friday, January 27, the Subzero Sirens will host our neighbor Roc City B-Sides. This will be the first game for this season’s Sirens and you’ll see some new faces on the roster.

The rematch of 2016’s Playoff game between the Suicidal Saucies and the Devil Dollies will take place Saturday, February 4 at 2 p.m. This will be, in a way, a battle between Furies as well with Blackrock Bruiser coaching the Saucies and Murphy and Bricks Hit-House acting as assistant coaches to the Dollies.

The Queen City Juniors will skate out for their first home game on Sunday February 12 at 2 p.m. We haven’t solidified their opponent yet, so stay tuned for more information.

The Lake Effect Furies, after their jubilant trip out west to the WFTDA Vancouver D1 Playoffs, will play their first game of the season at home on Saturday, March 25th at 7 p.m. (opponent to be announced.) They will play four games at home this season (all Saturdays at 7 p.m.) April 22 against Steel City from Pittsburgh, PA; May 6 against Boston Roller Derby; and May 20 against Ohio Roller Derby.

The last three games have been confirmed doubleheaders. Once the Furies leave the floor, the Subzero Sirens will take on Steel, Boston and Ohio’s B-teams. It’s a BOGO roller derby game opportunity. Heading into their second season, the Sirens have invited Greater Toronto Roller Derby to play on March 3 and will also play the Hammer City Harlots on June 11.

In addition to the season opener, the Dollies and Kats will meet up on April 14 and the Dollies and Saucies will repeat their first game on March 12. The Kats and Saucies will play twice on February 24 and April 28.

The season will be wrapped up with the #2 and #3 team meeting in the playoffs on May 12. The winner of that game will move on to play the #1 seed for the Queen City Cup on June 2. Grab tickets online at qcrg.net/tickets and come down to Buffalo Riverworks to cheer on the teams.
