This weekend (May 17-19) our Lake Effect Furies will be headed to the WFDTA Regional Championship for the North America Northeast region as a #8 seed. The annual WFTDA Playoff tournaments are the culmination of our work each season, with the top teams from these Regional Championships earning spots in the WFTDA Global Championship to be held later this year. Within the North America Northeast region, the top 3 teams at this weekend’s tournament will earn spots in the Global Championship.
This year’s tournaments are the first WFTDA post-season tournaments held since 2019, with travel play largely being on hold the last few years due to Covid-19. The time off also lead to a general overhaul of the WFTDA competitive structure, with a new regional system replacing the previous Division based structure. The Furies resumed sanctioned play last September. With their play over the last few months, the Furies have worked their way up to 8th in their region.
The Furies have previously competed in WFTDA Playoffs from 2013 to 2019, competing in the Divison 2 Playoffs in Kalamazoo (2013) and Kitchener-Waterloo (2014) and in the Division 1 Playoffs in Omaha (2015), Vancouver (2016), Dallas (2017), Atlanta (2018), and Seattle (2019). The Furies will begin play at 10:00 AM Friday, May 17 when they take on #9 Ann Arbor Roller Derby. The Furies most recently played Ann Arbor on September 30, 2023, losing 175 to 185.
