Lake Effect Furies Chili Cookoff 2014

Friday February 8th was cold, actually, it was downright frigid – the kind of night you hunker down on the sofa and watch back to back Law & Order SVU. Three words, five syllables drove scores of folks out into the winter night: Lake Effect Furies. The Lake Effect Furies are WNY’s premier, all-star traveling roller derby team – composed of the best of the best in the Queen City Roller Girls, this troupe of roller girls bring their game to cities across the U.S. Currently ranked 48 out of 175 leagues worldwide, these hard hitting gals brought it to the 2013 Eastern Region D2 playoffs, and they’re looking to bring it even further in 2014!

The Furies hosted their third annual chili cook-off fundraiser to help offset the cost of travel and other team expenses – the event boasted 20 different chilis, Flying Bison beers on tap, a horde of homemade sweets, and, of course, the Furies in all their glory!

Appliance Associates of Buffalo was stuffed to the gills with Furies supporters and chili eaters. All of the chilis were SO GOOD, and really, we’re all winners when Chili was involved, however, after a tough round of judging, winners were crowned in the overall, meat lovers, vegetarian and bison best categories.

The Best Overall went to Jeff Wilson with his Emporium Supreme, which had delightful cubes of oh so tender brisket in a smokey base. The Best Meat Lovers went to NSO Giant Boy Detective with his Good Eats Chili – this chili really was for the meat lovers, no filler, just delicious meat! Best Vegetarian went to team Punk N’ Pi with their aptly named Vegetarian Chili – it was served up with an avocado cream and had a really hearty flavor to it. Flying Bison’s Best with Beer went to Tracy Martell and her Sausage Chili – big chunks of sausage took her over the top!!

The Furies would like to thank everybody who came out to support and eat chili and be merry on a cold February night! Come watch them at home at Rainbow Rink on February 22nd!
