Bout Recap: Furies 198, Killamazoo 195; Knockouts 154, Saucies 141

NORTH TONAWANDA — As the Lake Effect Furies broke the century mark, they trailed the visiting Killamazoo Derby Darlins, 185-101, with 10 minutes to go in the bout. Which gave the the Furies had just a handful of jams to score nearly as many points as they’d racked up in the previous 44 go-rounds. It didn’t look good – the team Michigan was stacked like a brick wall – and just as unforgiving.

The best the Furies could do was minimize the damage and hope for the best. The crowd had braced for a blowout.

But the blowout never came on March 15. Instead, the Furies closed the 84-point defecit – and then some – and pulled out a 198-195 victory over the visitors. Insane jams from the Furies’ top stars, a rock-solid pack, and a full penalty box all added up to a W for the homers – and the night was only getting started.

The second bout of the night saw a matchup between two local squads: the Nickel City Knockouts and the Suicidal Saucies. Much like the first match, this one would come down to a few key jams in the closing minutes of the bout.

After resting their star jammers for the first half of the bout, the Knockouts found themselves deep in the red; At halftime, the Saucies led 101-25. The second half was a different story altogether, as LiBRAWLian and Abercrombie & Fists strapped on the starred helmets.

30 minutes and 124 points later, the Knockouts were able to pull off the win in the final moments. The final score: 154-141. LiBRAWLian took home 87 points on the night, followed by Crazy Legs’ 39 points; Abercrombie & Fists pitched in 20 points in her second-half performance, and Toots McGee scored 8 for the Knockouts.

The Saucies had some hot wheels of their own, with Alley Oops burning up the track for 64 points. Missfire had another 38, while Flame Throw-Her scored 26 passes. B’Kini Whacks topped it off with a baker’s dozen in points.

The Queen City Roller Girls are back in action on April 5. The juniors will start things off at 5:30, followed by the Alley Kats versus the undefeated Nickel City Knockouts.
