It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year …
Why is it the most wonderful time of the year? For the league members of QCRG, we know there are only a few days until our season begins. Our home and travel teams are at practice weekly, the league is practicing twice weekly and the anticipation of all that is possible for season 7 is spread out before all of us.
This is the time when our league seems to awaken from summer hibernation, shaking off injuries and disappointments of the last season and turning collectively toward new hopes and renewed dreams for what could or will be in 2013.
It is also a time when skaters reflect on why they joined roller derby. To remember who was in your boot camp when you joined; to think fondly of those sweat filled sessions; and realize just how far you’ve come and improved. To remember how much your love of the sport has grown – and of course how much the sport has changed. Change is especially coming in 2013 because our governing body, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) has released a new rule set – this season there will be no more minor rules. How will this affect the game? Will it make it slower or faster? Will it change the strategies? Only time will tell.
So do you think fans in Buffalo need to pay big bucks to enjoy big action? Think again! Roller derby is an up close and exciting sport. There are plenty of hard hits and there is plenty of strategy too. When you come to watch, you’ll get hooked on the adrenaline you can feel in the air when the fans are yelling for their favorite team or favorite player or for the underdogs or the undefeated team. It’s true you might chuckle when you hear some of the players’ names but once you experience the intensity of those players on the track, you’ll be hooked. And, when you join us at our after party, you’ll quickly realize that these hard hitting, tough athletes are some of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet.
