My first experience with derby was surprising a friend at her first game in Plattsburgh, NY. I was entertained, confused, and had accepted that it was something I could never possibly be tough enough to do myself. Then, I watched a game in Buffalo and felt completely empowered and excited. There was a boot camp training starting soon after that and I decided I was going to throw myself in head first. My decision to really pursue derby was fueled by my curiosity, as well as proving myself wrong and other people wrong who told me that I was too small, nice, etc. to play derby.
