The first time I watched roller derby I told myself there was no way I could play such a sport. This became the same reason I joined; to prove myself and other people wrong who assumed I was too small or nice to be a roller derby skater. As a female, there aren't many options for full contact sports, especially growing up in a tiny town. This is an aspect I immediately found attractive about the sport, along with it being predominantly female, a community, and on roller skates, which I was not familiar with at all. It seemed like such an exciting and challenging thing to try, so I dove in head first and I've found myself returning to the sport and community year after year.
