Bio:
The Queen of Bombers was the first mid-range bombing aircraft to carry her own fighter escort, using heavy armor, a tight formation of interlocking fields of fire from her sisters in formation, and 13 50-caliber Browning machine guns per plane. The Flying Fortress also was used exclusively on military and industrial targets during the Second World War, and saw very little action in missions against civilian targets or nighttime “terror raids”. But the craft’s most distinguishing feature, and what has remained in popular consciousness, was her sheer indestructibility. Many stories exist of badly damaged aircraft still finding their way home “on a wing and a prayer” to return their crews to safety. B picked the name because it’s easy to spell, and also because you don’t have to be the strongest or fastest or best, if you stay in your formation and simply won’t ever quit.
